The tragic events of October 7 and the distressing rise of antisemitism since, place even greater importance on the educational and outreach role of the Sydney Jewish Museum, especially for those outside our community. Now, more than ever, we need to be courageous, stand up to antisemitism, challenge hatred and tell our story with pride.
As the Museum expands in its size, programs and reach, investing in our ongoing work is an opportunity to tangibly change the world for the better. Work is already underway to create a new Centre for Contemporary Jewish Life alongside our Holocaust Museum. This Capital Appeal will help us expand our educational programs, illuminate the positive aspects of Jewish life, culture, art and history, and fill our expanded building with vibrancy, purpose and meaning. It is our collective responsibility as a community to make our museum strong.
Every donation has impact. More than ever, we need your investment to secure the future of the Sydney Jewish Museum.

Funds from this Capital Appeal will allow us to expand our educational programs, illuminate the positive aspects of Jewish life, culture, art and history and fill our building with more vibrancy, purpose and meaning.
This Capital Appeal is not to fund the development work currently happening at the Museum, these works have already been funded by government grants and a few very generous donor families.
The cost of operating the larger, upgraded Museum will be higher than up until now.
The Sydney Jewish Museum is moving towards financial self-sustainability and the 2025 Capital Appeal will help achieve this by growing the SJM Foundation, which generates annual income to run the Museum programs. It is only by doing so that the Museum’s critical work will continue across future generations on a sustainable basis.
We are grateful for the grants that we have received from both the Federal and State governments, but these funds are specifically for the Museum building.
We do not receive any government funding for operational requirements where, like all museums, we run at a significant deficit. Therefore, we need to turn to the community to cover the cost of existing and additional educational programs and exhibitions.
The new, expanded museum will create a home for Jewish art and culture in Sydney, alongside our Holocaust museum. It will showcase contemporary stories from the community, highlighting the significant connection between the Jewish community and Israel, and the diversity of Jewish culture in Sydney. These are stories that must be heard and that will help the Museum continue its work in combatting antisemitism and all forms of intolerance.
The expanded Museum is expected to open to visitors early 2027.
However, we continue to educate school students and corporate groups throughout construction in the Museum. We also look forward to hosting our series of Capital Appeal events in the Museum space in September.
